Summer School in Neuroscience

This course offers education in the use of in vivo techniques to assess the nervous system under physiological and impaired conditions and following pharmacological intervention.  The course includes familiarisation with stereotaxic injection, magnetic resonance imaging, assessment of sensory and motor function, behaviour testing and data handling, and to demonstrate an integrative approach to neuroscience research.

Skills & techniques

  • Induction & maintenance of anaesthesia
  • Tracheostomy & artificial ventilation
  • Arterial cannulation
  • Nerve stimulation/section
  • Behavioural testing

Participant feedback

  • “This course is the best I have ever attended.  It was very hands-on with small numbers in each group.”
  • “The mix of lectures and hands on was well balanced and it was great to get hands on experience to understand the difficulty of in vivo work, and the time and skill it requires - it isn't something you could learn from just lectures.”
  • “A first hand experience of complex preocedures and to see how they can be done positively by experienced experimenters.”
  • “A proper hands-on experience is essential to gain an understanding of how difficult and precise you have to be with in vivo procedures.  This cannot be achieved by watching a live procedure or a video.”
  • “I thought that this course provided a good balance of lectures and hands on practical learning.  All of the demonstrators were excellent teachers and could answer any questions that I had - without making me feel stupid for asking them!”
  • “I have thoroughly enjoyed the IMB summer school.  I found it to be really well organised and enjoyable.  I have learnt a lot and will certainly recommend this course to colleagues.”
