Undergraduate Training opportunities

Every year a number of IMB funded final year in vivo projects are offered to final year students on Anatomy, Pharmacology, Physiolgy or Neuroscience degree courses. These projects offer a unique opportunity for students to experience in vivo techniques as part of their degree training, a chance that less than 5% of UK undergraduates have access to.

Each project involves 2 days per week from September to March. Since the IMB Capacity-building Initiative started, 35 students undertaking degree courses at either Glasgow or Strathclyde Universities have completed in vivo projects with some of the following feedback,

  • "Working on an IMB funded project allowed me to experience what a real working lab is like. It allowed me to become skilled in a wide range of in vivo and in vitro techniques. As a reslt of this experience I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in science and decided to do a PhD."
  • "Not only is the IMB Programme a great practical experience but it gives you an edge that most new graduates don't have."
  • "I learned a wide variety of both invasive and non-invasive in vivo techniques, providing me with the confidence and competency to undertake these in real scientific research."
  • "I had the fantastic opportunity to work on an in vivo projected funded by IMB during my undergrauate degree. Gaining experience in a working lab environment is absolutely critical if you want to continue with research. I really  believe that without this experience, I wouldn't have been able to obtain my PhD position and feel as prepared as I do now."

The opportunity to select an in vivo project during the final year is restricted to students with an anticipated final degree of 2.1 or above, and will require all successful applicants to attend Personal Licence training prior to the start of your final year.

If you wish to be considered for one of the available final year in vivo projects in SIBS, please contact Professor Roger M Wadsworth, SIPBS, email: r.m.wadsworth@strath.ac.uk in the first instance.  If you wish to be considered for one of the available final year in vivo projects in College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, please contact Professor Mandy M MacLean, CMVLS, Graduate School, email: Mandy.MacLean@glasgow.ac.uk in the first instance.
